Reusable straw can be used as a key chain

We all know, as we have already spoken in several posts on this site (click here or here), of the problems faced by animals in the oceans due to the plastic rubbish we dispose of every day. And, if you’ve ever seen a video of animals suffering from it (if you did not see it you can see in the video at the end of this text), it’s time to change the mindset. It was thinking of this change of mentality that two Americans are revolutionizing the beverage industry. For this they have developed the FinalStraw, a reusable stainless steel straw that is foldable, easy to clean and still functions as a key chain.

Straws are typical material we use only once (sometimes not even that) and we discard it right away. And despite being used a little this material can be hundreds of years without decomposing in the environment and therefore can be ingested by animals and cause terrible damage. With this in mind, several companies are creating reusable straws, glass, bamboo, stainless steel, etc. But there was always a problem: how do I remember to bring my straw with me? And now we have the solution!

Unlike the other reusable stainless steel straws available on the market, the FinalStraw has a patented design designed to be even more practical to be transported. The 23cm straw is foldable and comes in a recyclable plastic box that works like a key chain. This allows it to be attached to the car key, backpack or other easy-to-carry objects. “Our mission is to eliminate single-use plastic, so our boxes take that into account,” says Miles Pepper, visionary co-founder of the project.

The ends of the FinalStraw are made of soft rubber, which makes it safer to be handled by children, compared to other straws. When removed from the carton, the foldable parts automatically snap into place, featuring the straw design, which can be used for both hot and cold beverages.

The sanitation of the equipment is also easy, since it comes with a portable cleaner also made of stainless steel and silicone that ensures practicality when washing the straw.

According the British newspaper “Independent” 500 million straws are used every day in the United States. The data is alarming, considering that these straws are not reusable and can take up to 400 years to decompose in nature. “I decided to start working on this product not only as a straw, but also as a movement to raise awareness of the restaurants, bars and cafes of the waste they are creating,” explains Emma Cohen, co-founder of FinalStraw.

According to the founders, the amount of straws used in the United States, if placed one after another we could give two and a half twists on the planet, per day! According to them, it is possible, with just one FinalStraw straw, to replace 548 other straws that could go after five minutes of use to the oceans.

The prototype of the straw is already being marketed on the Kickstarter and according to schedule, all straws purchased will be dispatched until November 2018 for the whole world.
